Ray Sydnor has been involved in sports for more than 20 years.
Today, as founder and CEO of the Baltimorebased Mentoring Academics Athletics in Partnership (MAAP), Inc., he uses his experience, knowledge and passion for young people to make a diff erence in their lives.
His extensive background in athletic excellence began with his success in football and basketball at Northwestern High School in Baltimore. His athletic talent earned him scholarships to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, which subsequently led to his NFL post with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Ray’s life, although advancing with the swi pace of an excelling football career, was conflicted by his experimenting with drugs and alcohol. For nearly two decades, he wrestled with the consequences that thwarted his promising future. While confronted with some of the most challenging and threatening experiences of his decisions, Ray turned his life around by turning his problems over to Jesus Christ. He became a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and eventually president of the Baltimore Chapter of the national organization.
Today, Sydnor invests his energy, time and talents in helping to steer youth across the country in the right direction. In 2002, he founded MAAP, a grassroots, community volunteerism program. This multi-level youth enrichment project provides tutoring and athletic programs for youths 7 to 18 year olds in the Baltimore area.
MAAP youth, come from impoverished urban neighborhoods, participate in activities designed to develop them socially and educationally, and fosters in them self-esteem, leadership, community service, and strong interpersonal skills.
Services are provided on 3 levels – an in-school partnership of Baltimore City, an inner-city school program, and a comprehensive family program on Saturdays.
A Baltimore native, Ray travels the USA, responding to requests for his speeches and presentations to men’s groups, youth, schools, colleges, universities and athletic organizations. He credits his success to his life transforming decision to follow Christ. He’s a loving husband and father who encourages others to reach out to help the youth of the community. |
